The basic septic treatment systems are an in-ground gravity septic system, a mound or pressure distribution system, or advanced systems including aerobic treatment. An in-ground gravity system works by allowing gravity drain the effluent waste from the septic tank into trenches installed under the surface. This requires that the septic system treatment area be below the outlet pipe in the septic tank.
A mound or pressure distribution system includes a lift station with a pump. The effluent waste water is pumped through a pipe to the septic treatment area. This system is installed to meet soil separation requirements.
Advanced treatment systems including aerobic treatment systems come in a wide variety of options. Special treatment systems are used when shallow soils exist on the site or space limitations do not allow for a standard in-ground or mound system.
